Dear friends,
the Week against homophobia continues and on this Saturday, March 28, at 6 p.m. we are going to show you the documentary film “The Times of Harvey Milk” by the American director Rob Epstein in the context of our project ComingOutCinema. This film was shot in 1984 and has since obtained many prestigious awards.
The director of the film Rob Epstein was kind enough to provide the organization “ComingOut” and the Russian LGBT network with his film for four film showings. Apart from Petersburg, the film will be shown in three other Russian regions. We sincerely thank the director for this possibility!
The film’s hero Harvey Milk was the first openly gay politician in the USA who run several years in a row for various public offices in San Francisco. In 1977 Harvey Milk was elected member of the San Francisco supervisory board. A year after the election he was shot together with the city’s mayor George Moscone.
The film tells the story of Milk’s life and fight for the rights of sexual minorities.
After the film a discussion on the topic “Would Harvey Milk be possible in today’s Russia?” is going to take place. Aleksandr Shurshev, member of the party “Yabloko” (”Apple”), the feminist Rima Sharifullina and the gay activist Igor Petrov are going to take part in the discussion.
The discussion will be conducted by Andrey Soshnikov, the organizer of the political debate project “Politgramota”.
